Marathon skin care: blisters, chafing and runner's nipple
Many half marathons and marathons are spoiled by blisters, chafing and raw nipples, not by fitness. Over 26.2 miles your foot strikes the ground tens of thousands of times and your shirt rubs your chest just as often. Small friction becomes real damage, especially in heat or rain.
Peak race seasons in the US: March to May and September to November. · Updated
What do marathon runners need to protect their skin?
For a marathon, most skin problems come from four spots: nipples (cover with nipple guards or tape), inner thighs and underarms (anti-chafe film or balm), and heels and toes (blister patches on known hotspots, plus moisture-wicking socks and broken-in shoes). Test everything on a long run first.

Tips
Marathon & Road tips
- Rehearse everything on your longest training run: shoes, socks, shirt, and every patch and guard you plan to wear.
- Choose synthetic or wool running socks. The AAD advises against cotton because it holds sweat.
- Apply anti-chafe film and nipple guards before you dress, to completely dry skin.
- Carry one spare blister patch in your shorts pocket or belt.
Questions
What should I put on my feet before a marathon?
Dry, well-fitted shoes and moisture-wicking socks you've trained in, plus a blister patch on any spot that has blistered before. Practice this on long runs first.
How do I stop chafing during a marathon?
Wear fitted, moisture-wicking clothing, cover known rubbing areas with anti-chafe film or balm before the start, and protect nipples with guards or tape.
